As the leaves start to change and a crispness fills the air, there’s no better time to embrace all the cozy and exciting activities that autumn has to offer.Â
Whether you’re looking forward to pumpkin spice everything, scenic hikes, or simply enjoying the cooler weather, we encourage you to create a Fall Bucket List to help you make the most of this magical season.Â
My Fall Bucket List
1. Visit a Pumpkin Patch & Turn it into a Carving NightÂ
Explore local pumpkin patches like Bengtson's Pumpkin Farm or Jack's Pumpkin Pop-Up and pick the perfect pumpkins for carving. Don’t forget to make pumpkin seeds after - it’s the best part of carving pumpkins!
2. Go on Fall-Themed Scavenger Hunt
Create a scavenger hunt with items like acorns, colorful leaves, and mini pumpkins. Here is a cute, free guide you can download.
3. Take Advantage of Apple Season
Visit orchards like Jonamac Orchard or Apple Holler for a day of apple picking. Or, if you’re not close to an orchard, head to your local grocery shore and make a homemade apple pie or apple cider.Â
4. Host a Football Game Day with a Chili Cook off
Invite guests over for a game and have everyone bring a seasonal snack or chili for a cook off. This is my favorite chili recipe -Â the spicier the better!!
5. Go on a Hayride or Corn Maze
Experience a traditional hayride or corn maze at places like Sonny Acres Farm or Goebbert's Farm. You could make it competitive and challenge a friend or your spouse to a race to see who finishes first!Â
6. Dress up for Halloween as a FamilyÂ
We have done this every year since my kids were born!! I love a good, themed costume. I suggest having everyone in the family offer a suggestion of what to be and cast a vote.
2023: Superheroes
2022: Your favorite childhood cereal
2021: Addams Family and 2020: Jurassic Park
2019: Wizard of Oz
7. Host a Fall Themed Potluck for Neighbors or FriendsÂ
Have everyone bring over a fall-themed treat like apple pies, pumpkin bread, or caramel apples and spend some time with friends or neighbors.
8. Go on a Nature Hike & Collect the Prettiest Fallen LeavesÂ
Enjoy a hike at your local forest preserve or travel out to Starved Rock State Park or the Chicago Botanic Garden to see the fall foliage up close.
If you have young kids, we like to hunt for pretty leaves to bring home for an art project.Â
9. Have a Bonfire & Smores Night
Gather around a bonfire for s'mores and storytelling at places like Northerly Island or even your backyard.
10. Decorate for Fall with Mums and Pumpkins
Spend a day decorating your home with fall-themed decor, including wreaths, gourds, and cozy blankets.
11. Visit a Farmers' Market
Check out local farmers' markets for seasonal produce and fall goodies.
12. Have an outdoor spooky movie night
Host your friends over for a spooky movie night with popcorn and snacks.Â
Bonus if you create a scary charcuterie board!
